His exposition makes it clear that it is not a struggle against imperialism in the abstract, but concretely a struggle against the military which holds state power and the ultimate external backers of the neoliberal system it oversees. It will be a struggle on two fronts, internal and external.

CPU recounts Mao’s distinction between the principal and secondary contradictions in the struggle. The struggle in China was waged on two fronts: against the Kuomintang regime and the local warlords as well as against the Japanese imperial forces. Both fronts were elements of the principal contradiction. The confrontation with the former was not, in any shape or form, for resolving a secondary contradiction.

Call them what you want: local agents of imperialism, comprador capitalists (CPU, page iv), comprador bourgeoisie or petty bourgeoisie; the essence is the same. This group directly or indirectly controls the state and uses it to amass considerable wealth. With no compunction in killing thousands to retain power, it is no ally of the people. And it is not a matter of personalities. The struggle to dislodge the local rulers from the seat of power will now or later face the wrath of the imperial external backers, especially if measures to fundamentally transform the socioeconomic system are adopted. If we are clear on this point, a wrangle over the `correct name’ can only have a divisive, counter-productive effect.

Politicians with loyalty to powerful interests employ vitriolic labels to stifle rational discourse and create the impression that their opponent has bad intent. For example, if an activist in the US promotes increased funding for public schools in poor, minority neighborhoods, or campaigns for a state funded and controlled health insurance scheme like that in Canada or the UK, rightwing politicians quickly call him a `communist.’ The label says it all. No more talk is needed. Do no not listen to that person. He/she is evil. That tactic often stymies even moderate attempts to change the prevailing system.
